Why look at raw meta tags
CMS plugins, theme settings and frameworks all write meta tags, and they do not always agree. A page can end up with two descriptions, a leftover noindex from staging, or Open Graph tags pointing at the wrong image. Viewing the source works, but on a modern page the head is hundreds of lines. This tool pulls out just the tags.
The tags that matter most
- title. Not a meta tag strictly, but the most important element in the head. Keep it under about 60 characters.
- description. The snippet candidate. 120–160 characters.
- robots.
index, followis the default and does not need stating.noindexkeeps a page out of search;nofollowstops links passing value. - viewport.
width=device-width, initial-scale=1is required for a mobile-friendly page. - *og: and twitter:.* Link previews on social apps and chat. Check them in the Open Graph checker with a live preview.
- charset. Should be
utf-8and near the top of the head.
Link tags in the head
The table also lists <link> elements that affect indexing and branding: canonical, alternate (including hreflang and RSS feeds), icon and apple-touch-icon, manifest, and prev/next. Use the canonical checker or hreflang checker to validate those in detail.
Tags you can skip
meta keywords has been ignored by Google for over a decade. revisit-after, rating and distribution do nothing for search. They are harmless, but there is no reason to add them. If you are writing tags from scratch, the meta tag generator produces a clean set.
