What FAQ schema does
FAQPage structured data marks up a list of questions and answers so search engines and AI tools can read them as pairs rather than as loose text. It is written in JSON-LD, a block of JSON inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag that visitors never see.
Will it get me FAQ rich results?
Probably not in Google, and it helps to know why. Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites. For everyone else the markup is still valid and still read: it helps Google understand the page, Bing still uses it, and AI answer engines parse question-and-answer pairs readily. It is worth adding to pages that genuinely have an FAQ section, but it is not a shortcut to more space in the results.
Rules that keep it valid
- The FAQ must be visible on the page. Marking up questions that are not shown to visitors breaks Google's guidelines.
- One answer per question, written by you. User-submitted questions with several answers are QAPage, not FAQPage.
- No advertising. Answers that are just sales copy are a policy violation.
- One FAQPage per page. Combine all the questions into a single block.
Writing questions that work
Use the phrasing people actually search: "Is there a free plan?" rather than "Pricing tiers explained". Keep answers short and complete, two to four sentences, so they make sense when quoted on their own. That same structure is what AI assistants lift into answers.
Check it
