# Slug Generator

> Turn titles into clean URL slugs: lowercase, accents removed, punctuation stripped, optional stop word removal and max length. Bulk mode handles one per line.

Use it free at https://swipetolaunch.com/tools/slug-generator

## How to use it

1. **Type a title.** Or switch on bulk mode and paste one title per line.
2. **Choose options.** Hyphen or underscore, drop stop words, cap the length.
3. **Copy the slug.** In bulk mode, repeats get -2, -3 so each slug is unique.

## What a slug is

The slug is the readable part of a URL after the domain: in `example.com/blog/launch-checklist`, the slug is `launch-checklist`. Search engines show it in results, people read it before they click, and it ends up in every link to the page. A short, clear slug looks trustworthy and is easy to share.

## What this tool does

- **Lowercases everything.** Some servers treat `/Pricing` and `/pricing` as different pages, which creates duplicates.
- **Removes accents.** "Crème brûlée" becomes `creme-brulee`, so the URL stays plain ASCII for Latin text. Letters in other scripts are kept.
- **Strips punctuation.** Apostrophes vanish (`dont`), ampersands become `and`, everything else becomes a separator.
- **Drops stop words** when you ask: "The Best Tools for the Job" becomes `best-tools-job`.
- **Caps the length** at a whole word, so a slug never ends halfway through one.

## Slug best practice

- **Use hyphens.** Google treats hyphens as word separators. Underscores join words together, so `launch_checklist` can read as one token.
- **Keep it short.** Three to five words is plenty. Drop dates and years unless the page is genuinely about that date, so the URL does not age.
- **Include the main keyword**, once, the way people search it.
- **Do not change it later** without a redirect. A slug is a promise. If you must change one, add a 301 with the [redirect generator](/tools/redirect-generator).

## Questions

### Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words and an underscore as part of the word, so hyphenated slugs are easier to read for both people and search engines.

### How long should a URL slug be?

Short enough to read at a glance, usually three to five words or under about 60 characters. Shorter slugs are easier to share and less likely to be cut off in search results.

### Should I remove stop words from slugs?

Often, yes, when it keeps the meaning. 'how-to-launch-on-product-hunt' reads better with 'how-to' kept, so check the result rather than stripping blindly.

### Can I change a slug after publishing?

Yes, but always add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, or every existing link and search result will hit a 404.
