# Meta Tags Checker

> List every meta tag on any web page: title, description, robots, viewport, Open Graph, Twitter, http-equiv, plus canonical, alternate and icon links.

Use it free at https://swipetolaunch.com/tools/meta-tags-checker

## How to use it

1. **Paste a URL.** The page you want to inspect. Redirects are followed.
2. **Check tags.** We read the <head> and list every meta tag and the link tags search engines care about.
3. **Scan the table.** Lengths are shown for the title and description. Filter by name to find one tag fast.

## Why look at raw meta tags

CMS plugins, theme settings and frameworks all write meta tags, and they do not always agree. A page can end up with two descriptions, a leftover `noindex` from staging, or Open Graph tags pointing at the wrong image. Viewing the source works, but on a modern page the head is hundreds of lines. This tool pulls out just the tags.

## The tags that matter most

- **title.** Not a meta tag strictly, but the most important element in the head. Keep it under about 60 characters.
- **description.** The snippet candidate. 120–160 characters.
- **robots.** `index, follow` is the default and does not need stating. `noindex` keeps a page out of search; `nofollow` stops links passing value.
- **viewport.** `width=device-width, initial-scale=1` is required for a mobile-friendly page.
- **og:* and twitter:*.** Link previews on social apps and chat. Check them in the [Open Graph checker](/tools/open-graph-checker) with a live preview.
- **charset.** Should be `utf-8` and near the top of the head.

## Link tags in the head

The table also lists `<link>` elements that affect indexing and branding: `canonical`, `alternate` (including hreflang and RSS feeds), `icon` and `apple-touch-icon`, `manifest`, and `prev`/`next`. Use the [canonical checker](/tools/canonical-url-checker) or [hreflang checker](/tools/hreflang-checker) to validate those in detail.

## Tags you can skip

`meta keywords` has been ignored by Google for over a decade. `revisit-after`, `rating` and `distribution` do nothing for search. They are harmless, but there is no reason to add them. If you are writing tags from scratch, the [meta tag generator](/tools/meta-tag-generator) produces a clean set.

## What you get

- Every name, property, http-equiv and charset meta tag
- Canonical, alternate, icon and manifest links
- Character counts for title and description
- Filter the table by tag name or value

## Questions

### How do I check a website's meta tags?

Paste the page URL above. The tool fetches the HTML and lists every meta tag it finds, with the title and description lengths shown.

### Do meta keywords still matter?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag since 2009 and Bing treats it as a possible spam signal. You can leave it out.

### Why does my page have two descriptions?

Usually a theme and an SEO plugin both output one. Search engines pick one, not necessarily yours. Turn off the duplicate in the theme or plugin settings.

### Does the tool show tags added by JavaScript?

No. It reads the HTML the server sends. Social platforms and many crawlers do the same, so tags that only exist after JavaScript runs are often missed by them too.
